Covid-19: “Wear googles if you have” – Dr. Fauci

Dr Anthony Fauci, an infectious disease expert in the US, has said that people should wear googles for complete protection from Covid-19 as the virus can enter the body through any mucosal surface – including the mouth, nose or eyes.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Coronavirus is primarily contagious through respiratory droplets expelled when people cough or sneeze, but growing evidence suggests that droplets from just regular speaking or breathing may be able to spread the disease too.

These droplets can get into the eyes, too, according to Dr Fauci.

‘If you have goggles or an eye shield, you should use it,’ Dr Fauci told ABC News in an Instagram Live interview.

According to Dr Fauci, viral particles on your hands won’t infect you through your skin. But touching your nose, mouth or eyes, can introduce the virus to cells it can invade.

“If you really want perfect protection of your mucosal surfaces – mucosal surfaces in your mouth, your nose, but also in your eyes,’ said Dr Fauci.

‘Theoretically, you should protect all the mucosal surfaces, so if you have goggles or an eye shield, you should use it,’ said Dr Fauci.

Dr Fauci also discussed the role of aerosols – a fine mist that can linger and travel further through the air – in coronavirus transmission.

‘We don’t know the relative role of aerosol [transmission]…we can assume it plays a role,’ he said.

Hydroxychloroquine: Facebook, Twitter and Youtube deletes Dr. Stella Immanuel’s videos

Facebook, Twitter and Youtube has deleted videos by an American-based doctor, Dr. Stella Immanuel who claimed to have successfully treated about 350 Covid-19 patients using a combination of hydroxychloroquine, zinc and Zithromax.

The video was first published by Breitbart News, a right-wing medium co-founded by Steve Bannon, a former aide to American President, Donald Trump.

In the video, which was shot in front of the United States Supreme Court, Dr Immanuel is seen with seven others wearing white lab coats calling themselves “America’s Frontline Doctors” and addressing the press.

She claimed in the video that, “you don’t need masks” to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, and that recent studies showing hydroxychloroquine is ineffective for the treatment of Covid-19 are “fake science” sponsored by “fake pharma companies.”

“This virus has a cure, it’s called hydroxychloroquine, zinc, and Zithromax,” she claims. “You don’t need masks, there is a cure.”

Her claims run contrary to multiple studies on the anti-malarial drug and advice from public health officials to prevent the spread of the virus.
President Trump, who is up for reelection in November, shared multiple versions of the video with his 84 million Twitter followers on Monday night.

The video quickly went viral on Facebook and other social media platforms, becoming one of the top-performing posts on Facebook with more than 14 million views before it was taken down Monday night for promoting misinformation. It was shared nearly 600,000 times, according to Crowdtangle, a data-analytics firm owned by Facebook.

“We’ve removed this video for sharing false information about cures and treatments for COVID-19,” a Facebook spokesperson told CNN, adding that the platform is “showing messages in News Feed to people who have reacted to, commented on or shared harmful COVID-19-related misinformation that we have removed, connecting them to myths debunked by the WHO.”

Twitter took action against the videos that Trump retweeted. By early Tuesday morning, the videos were no longer able to be viewed on his account. Twitter also took action on a version of the video posted by Donald Trump Jr. and others shared by Breitbart News.
“We’re taking action in line with our Covid misinfo policy,” a Twitter spokesperson told CNN.

The video was also removed by YouTube, where it had been viewed more than 40,000 times. Users attempting to access the video late Monday were greeted with a message that said it had been removed for “violating YouTube’s Community Guidelines.”

According to the website for America’s Frontline Doctors, the group is led by Dr. Simone Gold, a Los Angeles-based emergency medicine specialist who has previously been featured on Fox News for her views that stay-at-home orders are harmful. Gold told the Associated Press in May that she wanted to speak out against stay-home orders because there was “no scientific basis that the average American should be concerned” about Covid-19.

Meanwhile, she has threatened Facebook to restore her page and videos or their computers will start to crash and they face shutdown.

Akpabio reveals names of lawmakers who got NDDC contracts

Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, has named some federal lawmakers who allegedly got contracts from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

In a document sighted by PREMIUM TIMES, the named lawmakers include the Chairman of the Senate committee on Niger Delta, Peter Nwabaoshi, whose name was listed against 53 projects.
Some of the projects mentioned include emergency repairs of Asue Street, Owa Phase 2; ldumuogbe Road via Ojemaye; Otolokpo College Road, Otolokpo; and the Police lshu Ani Ukwu Road, Issele Uku, in Delta State.

Others are Senator Matthew Urhoghide who got six projects, Senator James Manager who got six contracts and a former senator, Samuel Anyanwu, who got 19 projects.
The former Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on the NDDC, Nicholas Mutu, was also named by the minister as receiving 74 contracts – the highest among the listed lawmakers.

Some of the projects include emergency roads in Delta, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Rivers states.
A few others were simply identified as Ondo and Edo Reps.

A spokesperson for Mr Akpabio, Aniete Ekong, confirmed that the document containing the names was part of those sent by Mr Akpabio to lawmakers investigating the NDDC.
The document also contained a list of projects assigned to non-members of the National Assembly.

Although the costs of the projects were not stated, the document shows that most of the projects were awarded in 2018, a year before the ninth assembly was inaugurated. It is also not clear whether or not they are constituency projects.

This revelation is coming days after the minister alleged that majority of the contracts in NDDC are given out to members of the National Assembly. Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, then gave Akpabio 48 hours to provide the list or he would sue the minister for alleged defamation of character.

The minister however retracted his claim saying his reference was not to current lawmakers of the ninth assembly.

This is also coming days after the Senate resolved to investigate allegations of corruption levelled by the Niger Delta Development Commission against some lawmakers.

The Senate gave its committee on ethics, privileges and public petitions four weeks to probe the allegations made by the management of the NDDC and Mr Akpabio.

Both the House and the Senate have been investigating alleged misappropriation of funds and financial recklessness in the commission.
