Saudi Arabia bans underage marriages

The Saudi Arabia Ministry of Justice has set 18 years as minimum age for marriage and banned the marriage of persons under 18 years.

The Minister of Justice and Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council, Sheikh Walid Al-Samaani, issued the new directive through a circular sent to all the courts in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Child marriages are commonplace in Saudi Arabia with one in seven girls marrying before the age of 18.

According to the Justice Ministry ruling, any teenager below the age of 18 will from now on be referred to specialized courts that will assess whether they can get married or not.

These courts’ job is to study each child marriage case to confirm that the future spouse who’s under 18 years old, boy or girl, will not be harmed as a result of this wedding and that this union will be of the best interest to the youngster.

This new decision follows an earlier law that was revealed in January of this year and which bans the marriage of children under 15 years old. Prior to the latter, Saudi Arabia did not have a minimum legal age for marriage.

Covid-19: 20 Nigerian doctors died in one week – NMA

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced that 20 doctors died of Coronavirus complications within the past seven days.

Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Enema Amodu, revealed this in Abuja during a press briefing on Friday, December 25.

Amodu also stated that medical personnel are in need of personal protective equipment (PPEs) as the second wave of infections in the country has been “catastrophic.”

Read his address below:

“Everywhere around the world at this time, we are facing a second wave, and this second wave is so overwhelming and more catastrophic because a lot of people have gone back to the way of doing things thinking that the virus is over, and it is gone and they have let their guards down.

“For those of us in the health sector, we have lost quite a number of colleagues in the last one week alone. Across the nation, we have lost professors, consultants, residents (both senior and junior), very senior medical officers and nurses – some of them you may not hear of and some you may hear depending on the circumstances and whatever positions they are occupying. This goes to show that this virus is very much with us and they call it a second wave, but it is actually a continuum because it never really left us.

“I am here this afternoon on Christmas Day to solidarise first with the families of our members that have lost loved ones. I want to make it public that we are with you in this very trying and grieving moment of sadness over the loss of our colleagues who most likely are the breadwinners of their families. We also want to use this opportunity to talk to our patients; when you come to us in the hospitals and clinics, please oblige us and wear your mask. Tell us the truth about your past medical condition and don’t hold any information back.

“The figure of the number of our colleagues that have died is evolving everyday but as I am standing here, I got a call from a colleague who is in an isolation centre, and he is not sounding very good. I can give you a figure now that by evening it will change. But I can tell you from the top of my head across the country, we have lost not less than 20 doctors in the last one week.

“By the grace of God, I am standing here today as a survivor because as an ENT consultant, I inadvertently saw a patient that I did not know had COVID-19 and she did not tell me, and she knew. I was exposed and contracted the virus; I developed symptoms but by the grace of God my colleagues rallied around me and I survived.

“Our patients need to follow the laid-down rules and we are not degrading or insulting anybody. As you enter the hospital premises, most hospitals now have facilities for you to wash your hands and ensure that you wear your mask – please comply. Also, when you sit with a doctor, ensure you keep a safe distance.”

On hazard allowance, Amodu added:

“The President of the NMA, Prof. Innocent Ujah, has not rested on his oars since this pandemic broke out. I was privileged to be part of a team that went to see the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Femi Gbajabiamila. The President put forward the issue of our hazard allowance. There is no need to hide anything anymore. I can tell you that our hazard allowance is N5, 000 per month. The Speaker of the House of Representatives has assured my President that they will do something about it and we believe he will do something about it because he is a legislator that believes that the health sector is key to development.

“Our members are dying and my colleagues are suffering and angry. But we have taken an oath and that is why we are still providing services, and we will continue to provide services. We just asked the government to do their own bit and help us so that we can change the narrative of the health sector.

“We hope that the government will start off the new year with a reviewed hazard allowance. But I am not oblivious of the processes for it to be gazette and captured in our salaries and wages. We expect that the government will expedite action because we need this show of solidarity from the government because the virus is still very much with us but we are still working. Giving a time frame now will seem as though we are trying to issue a threat or ultimatum but we are not. We expect the government to do the needful.”

Covid-19: New variant discovered in the UK has been found in Nigeria

Scientists at the Africa Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), at the Redeemers University in Ede, Osun State has said that the new variant of the coronavirus currently causing concern in the United Kingdom and the European Union has been identified in Nigeria.

In a publication shared on Virological, a website for the global Genomics community, scientists at the Africa Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases at Ede said that they found the same variant “lineage B.1.1.7” existing in Osun State since August 3rd when the first sample was collected. The publication also stated that another sample, also from Osun State, collected in October, correspondingly showed the presence of this new variant.

In an interview with Premiumtimes, Professor Christian Happi who is the Director at the Africa Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), said:

“The B.1.1.7 lineage we found in Nigeria, predating the one described in the UK, has also been observed to rise rapidly in the UK over the past four weeks, indicating the plausible increased spread of the virus by specific non-synonymous mutations in the spike protein.”

He however refused to attribute the new variance found in Nigeria to the spike in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country in recent times.

“We however haven’t observed such rapid rise of the lineage in Nigeria and do not have sufficient evidence to indicate that the B.1.1.7 lineage is contributing to increased transmission of the virus in Nigeria,” he said.

Speaking further, Happi said:

“At the moment, only about 1% of the genomes from Nigeria belong to the new SARS-CoV-2 variant (B.1.1.7 lineage) and one of them predates the first description in the UK. However, this might change in the next few weeks when we sequence more samples from the recently reported surge of covid-19 in Nigeria. Other reported mutations such as the N501Y, A570D, and the HV 69 – 70 deletion in the spike protein have not been detected in our genomes yet, this could also be associated with the non-increase of the lineage in Nigeria currently.

In as much as the full effect of this mutation isn’t known yet and it is still being studied, the importance of a robust genomic surveillance system cannot be overemphasized as we can identify and report changes in the genomes of pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 that are of public health interest”
