Health Minister discloses drug used to treat Covid-19 patients in Nigeria

Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire has disclosed the drug used in treating covid-19 patients in Nigeria.

In his address to members of house of Representatives on Tuesday, May 5, Ehanire named Remdesivir as the drug being used to treat infected patients.

“We have been using that (Remdesivir); we have tried that in Lagos too. So, we have tried the antiretroviral drug to see what effect it has,” he said.

He said that the drug was originally developed as a potential treatment for ebola but it has been adopted as an option in treating Covid-19.

Remdesivir was tested in about 1,063 hospitalized Coronavirus patients around the world and it was discovered that it reduced recovery time by 31%. It takes about 11 days on average versus 15 days for those given usual care.
